WWYS #23: Sea Street

BLOG UPDATE: MARCH 10th, 2016

Hey Everybody! I've got something really fun to share with you today! I'm taking part in Kylie Bertucci's International Stampin' Up! Blog Highlight! What is that you may ask? Kylie has gathered together an incredibly talented group of Stampin' Up! Demonstrators from all over the world and given us the opportunity to participate in a "Thank You" themed Blog Highlight together! She has also taken it one step further and made the Blog Highlight into a contest! If you want to see all of the the amazing cards that these demonstrators have contributed please click here to go to Kylie's blog. If you visit Kylie's blog, you will also be able to vote for your five favorite cards! I hope you will vote so that some deserving demonstrator will have the honor of winning this contest.

If this is your first time here visiting my blog then WELCOME! I'm so glad to have you stop by. My name is Maria Willis and I live in a small mountain town in California, USA. I have been stamping and paper crafting for about two years now and I absolutely love it! I'm married and have an almost 14 year old son. My husband is a professional off-road dirt bike racer and my son and I both train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It may seem strange that I love to sit alone quietly stamping the day away... then I like to head to the gym for a combat sport! Hahaha! It works for me! Oh, yeah, I'm also a massage therapist. I own/run a massage, acupuncture and chiropractic business. What about you? Aside from stamping and paper crafting what do you love to do? I would love to have you leave me a comment so that I can learn a little bit about you.

And now, on to my project... I am submitting a fun watercolor Thank You card that I made for the What Will You Stamp Challenge blog where I am a design team member. I hope you'll like it because I sure had a blast making it! Please let me know what you think!...

ORIGINAL POST:
Hello everybody! Here we are again-another Monday and another What Will You Stamp Challenge! This week's challenge is to use the Stampin' Up! set called Sea Street. It's a really fun set and I really enjoyed creating this ocean scene thank you card.

I used a technique I have not ever used before to create my background. I used one of my large acrylic stamping blocks and inked it up with lots of colors using my ink pads (I just applied them directly to the block starting with the lightest color first so that I wouldn't muddy up the colors). Then I used a spritzer filled with rubbing alcohol to spritz the inked up block and then I pressed it onto my paper. Note that I used Whisper White card stock instead of watercolor paper. Part of this experiment was because I had wanted to see if I could create a nice watercolor look on regular cardstock. I think it turned out well. I did have to apply color 2-3 times in some spots because I didn't want a lot of white to show through. The good news is that because I used alcohol instead of water it was relatively quick drying and my paper didn't warp the way I thought it might (even when I hit it with my heat tool).

After I did the background I stamped the little fish from Sea Street and embossed them in silver. I embossed the sentiment in silver on vellum and added some silver thread (I love the new silver thread!!) and one of the new pearl embellishments. Of course I used the new Banner Triple Punch to get the perfect flag on my banner-so easy!

Here's what the whole Sea Street stamp set looks like. It's got quite a few fun options. You can get creative and make something more serious or elegant like I did (Ok, I know mine isn't really elegant but it isn't really a kid's card either, right?), or, you can make an amazing card for kids or sea life lovers. Next time I use this set I think I'll be all about those cute little sea stars!

I hope you liked my WWYS card this week. Thanks so much for stopping by and don't forget to check out what the rest of the design team has made over at the What Will You Stamp? challenge blog. If you have this set please share your own designs with us. We would love to see your ideas too!

Have an amazing week everybody!
-Maria

  6. Great technique. I too was wondering what a "water color" image would look like on whisper white. I don't have the set, but your card is making me have second thoughts. Thanks for sharing.
